When the gods and the demons churned the milky ocean in days of yore, nectar came out of it. Lord Vishnu assumed the form of Mohini, a charming lady, deluded the demons and distributed the nectar only among the gods. But Rahu had disguised himself as a god. The sun and the moon pointed this out to Mohini who immediately slashed off the demon's head. Since the nectar had by then already reached up to the neck, he did not die. Thus the head came to be known as Rahu and the body as Ketu. To avenge this betrayal, Rahu and Ketu periodically eclipse the sun and the moon.

On the occurrence of a solar or lunar eclipse, one shall give up all activities and get purified, and mentally recite mantras of Lord Shree Krishna.

Shikshapatri Shlok 87
When the eclipse is over, my devotees shall bathe with their clothes on. Thereafter those who are householders shall give something in charity according to their means while the sadhus shall worship God.

This is one of the most auspicious days in the Hindu calendar. Two incarnations of Lord Narayan were incarnated on earth on this very day in the form of Lord Shree Ram and Lord Swaminarayan.

On the ninth day of the first fortnight of chaitra, in the early rising of the punarvasu constellation in the sky at noon Lord Ram was born to Kaushalya and King Dashrath of Ayodhya.

On the same night in Samvat 1837 Chaitra Sud Navmi. It was 10:10pm, on this auspicious moment of time no other normal child was born, but Almighty God Supreme had taken birth. He was born in the house of Bhaktimata and Dharmadev in Chappaiya, a village in Northern India.
